Polina Goncharova

Polina Goncharova was born in Moscow. She is a member of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia and the International Federation of Artists. Trained as a historian, Goncharova graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Her background in history and cultural studies has become an important foundation of her artistic practice. During her university years, Goncharova focused on the history of culture, philosophy, symbolic systems, and the ways human experience has been interpreted across different historical periods. This education shaped her lasting interest in how people perceive reality, how cultures construct systems of meaning, and how symbols change their significance depending on historical context.

Painting has accompanied Goncharova since childhood and gradually became her primary means of exploring the world. Her artistic path began with classical oil painting and the study of traditional techniques. Over time, however, her practice shifted toward contemporary art, acrylic painting, and mixed media. This transition allowed the artist to move beyond academic representation and to approach painting as a space for analyzing contemporary reality.

At the center of her practice is the human condition at a moment when stable reality begins to dissolve — between physical experience, mediated perception, and the mixing of cultural codes. The artist explores the present as an unstable system in which reality is no longer perceived as a coherent whole, but is assembled from images, archival traces, cultural signs, visual simulations, and fragments of memory.

The migration of symbols, cultural mutation, and the reconstruction of identity hold particular importance in Goncharova’s work. Ornaments, architectural fragments, pieces of fabric, color blocks, monochrome zones, lines, faces, and silhouettes become elements of a visual language through which the artist examines how former symbolic systems lose their stability and become incorporated into new hybrid structures.

Working with acrylic and mixed media, Goncharova builds her compositions through collage logic, fragmentation, and the encounter between painterly, archival, and symbolic elements. In her paintings, the human figure is not the protagonist of a personal narrative. Rather, it appears as a symptom of the era — a carrier of shifts in which identity, memory, and experience no longer retain a fixed form.

For Goncharova, painting becomes an analytical field where reality appears as an unstable construction formed from fragments of experience, memory, images, and symbolic systems. Yet disintegration in her work is never a final point. Instead, it opens the possibility of new connections, new structures, and other forms of presence.
